Room is designed to create a life-like experience by elevating performance of a game engine. Like other game engines, certain features in Room may not be available depending on the support from your computer or mobile device. Reflections that enhance reality on the desktop are among the features that require a graphics processor and may be disabled to prevent overheating on devices with lower performance.
If you believe your computer has a second graphics processor, you can follow the steps below to force your browser to use the more powerful second graphics processor, allowing you to experience a higher visual presentation in Room.
Windows computers
- Use the windows search bar to find Settings. Alternatively try Win + I key combination.
- Select System, then Display, then Graphics settings.
- Under “Choose an app to set preference” click on “Desktop app”
For Chrome: - Navigate to the Chrome installation directory (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\) and select chrome.exe
For Edge: - Navigate to the Edge installation directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\) and select msedge.exe
- Once Chrome/Edge is added to the list, click on it and then click the "Options" button. In the pop-up, choose "High performance" which will typically use the discrete GPU instead of the integrated one. Depending on your windows version, choosing the second graphics processor from the list in the same section might be enough.
- Ensure Chrome/Edge is restarted for the changes to take effect. You may need to restart your computer as well.
Keep in mind that the actual menu names and options might vary slightly depending on your Windows version.
Mac computers
To force Chrome or Safari to use a specific GPU on a Mac, you generally rely on macOS to manage GPU switching automatically based on performance demands, as most Macs don't have manual controls like on Windows for specific applications. However, you can ensure optimal power and performance settings via system preferences.
Ensure Automatic Graphics Switching is Enabled:
- Click on the Apple menu and select "System Preferences."
- Go to "Energy Saver" for older Macs (using Intel processors) or "Battery" in newer macOS versions (for Macs with Apple Silicon).
- Ensure that "Automatic graphics switching" (for Macs with discrete and integrated GPUs) is checked. This allows macOS to switch between integrated and discrete graphics based on the application's demands.
Optimize Chrome:
- Open Chrome, select the three-dot menu, and go to "Settings."
- Under "Advanced" or “System” menu, you can enable "Use hardware acceleration when available" to ensure that Chrome will take advantage of more powerful hardware for graphical tasks.
